Made Together
Across South Yorkshire, progress isn’t a solo effort; it’s a powerful collaboration. Throughout the past year, the University and its partners are building a healthier, greener, more innovative, and culturally vibrant region.

Transforming Healthcare
A powerful example of this commitment is the groundbreaking IMProVE trial, a £4.5 million initiative aimed at revolutionising prostate cancer screening for Yorkshire men. By combining PSA blood tests with advanced MRI scans, Professor Jim Catto is spearheading a potential national programme that promises to reduce overdiagnosis and tackle health inequalities. This trial, focused on Sheffield and Leeds, underscores our dedication to addressing critical health challenges.

Regional Transformation
Beyond healthcare, the University is a powerhouse of innovation and commercialisation. Our top ranking in England for business and public engagement, demonstrated by the recent Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF), highlights our impact on the regional economy. The Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC), with its collaborations with industry giants like Boeing and Rolls-Royce, and the cutting-edge Energy Innovation Centre solidify Sheffield’s position as a hub for advanced technology. Our spinouts are also successful: recently Phlux Technology secured £9 million in funding to drive next-generation fibre broadband and expansion into optical communications and sensing.
Empowering Culture
Our dedication to culture is demonstrated by Professor Vanessa Toulmin’s pivotal role in the Abbeydale Picture House restoration. As an expert on historic cinema, Professor Toulmin is ensuring that this Grade II listed building’s heritage is preserved while it’s transformed into a vibrant community space. This connection between past and future, facilitated by the University, is vital for enriching the region’s cultural landscape.
Supporting Sustainable Development
Leading sustainable manufacturing, we’re part of four new EPSRC-funded UK research hubs. These hubs will connect research to commercialisation in sectors like medicine and semiconductors, using AI, robotics, and advanced sensors for resource efficiency and a greener future for South Yorkshire.

Community CohesionÂ
Finally, our impact extends to grassroots community projects. Recently, students led by Landscape and Architecture student Sam Penrose, revitalised a derelict plot in North Sheffield into a thriving community garden. Enabled by the Nature Hubs Fund, this collaboration delivered a crucial green space, enhancing community life and bringing nature closer to local residents. Through these diverse initiatives, the University of Sheffield is demonstrably improving the lives of people across the region, forging a stronger, more sustainable, and vibrant future for South Yorkshire.Â
